HASAN Partners
Committee of African Studies of Harvard University (CAS)
The Harvard University Committee on African Studies began in 1969 as an interdisciplinary group of scholars appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences to coordinate teaching and research and advance knowledge and understanding of Africa within Harvard.
HASAN is committed to supporting the work of the CAS by providing grants for undergraduate and graduate research in Africa and by lobbying for the development of an African Studies Department at Harvard University.
Harvard African Students Association (HASA)
The Harvard African Students' Association, founded in 1977, is an organization committed to nourishing cultural, intellectual, political and economic awareness about the African continent. Many members of HASAN were members of HASA when they were students at Harvard.
Through the HASAN/HASA Mentoring Program, HASAN members are able to provide academic and professional mentoring to HASA undergraduates. HASAN also raises funds annually to support a HASA undergraduate undertaking summer research in Africa.
Harvard Black Alumni Society (HBAS)
Founded by alumni of Harvard College, The Harvard Black Alumni Society is a forum for Black Harvard Alumni to convene, communicate, and contribute to mutual professional development and the cultivation of black graduates both present and future. HBAS will serve to enrich and enlighten its membership, as well as to embrace the challenges and triumphs that we encounter “post-Harvard.” It is our intent that, through this organization, a strong and supportive community of Black Harvard Alumni exists to address pertinent issues, and to enhance the alumni experience of each graduating class in perpetuity. Through partnership with HBAS on projects of common interest, HASAN seeks to forge stronger links with other Harvard alumni of the African Diaspora.
Harvard Black Men’s Forum (BMF)
As Black men in this country, we are constantly faced with the reality of our situation as a people. The issues of fratricide, affirmative action and drug abuse among many others serve to torment our days and haunt our nights. An escape from this reality would be a welcome gift for us all. Although an oasis in the midst of this social and economic desert in which we live is unlikely to appear any time soon, we hold within us the ability to provide a means of temporary relief for ourselves and our comrades, while simultaneously leading our people ever closer to the promised land. This innate ability is no supernatural power given to us by a god, no secret metaphysical strength of mind or body bestowed on those with darker skin. It is instead a power which we observe everyday and is within us all: love.
HASAN’s Political Action Group, in collaboration with BMF, has developed Remix, a political monthly newsletter at Harvard which addresses issues of relevance to the African Diaspora.
Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies
The mission of the Center is to lead cross-disciplinary research on critical issues of population, health, and development, with the broad aim of promoting the well-being of the global poor.
