Annual Essay Contest
The HASAN Annual Essay Contest for Secondary School Students in Africa was officially launched on September 25, 2003! The theme for the first year, the 2003-2004 academic year, is Affordable Basic Healthcare.
The purpose of the Essay Contest is to stimulate secondary school or high school students in Africa to research issues relevant to the African continent, particularly on countries not their own, and to provide them with a forum through which they can express their views.
Through this Essay Contest, HASAN hopes to:
• Encourage the development of analytical skills in secondary school students in Africa.
• Provide financial support to secondary school students in Africa.
• Increase awareness about HASAN and its mission in African countries.
The top three contestants will receive monetary awards of $300, $200 and $100 respectively. In addition, all or parts of the winning essays will be published on this Web site, in The African Crimson, the official HASAN newsletter, and affiliated publications. Important dates to remember are:
• Deadline for submission of essays: March 15, 2004
• Announcement of winners: May 31, 2004
• Disbursement of awards: June 2004
Using the network of HASAN members who originate from 20 different African countries and our partners around the world, we plan to establish communication links with secondary schools and high schools in Africa to enable us to market the idea and generate support from teachers and guidance counselors. We encourage all interested parties to spread the word!
